First proper walk of the holiday – from the centre of Coniston up to Levers Water
The trails start in the village centre to the east of Church Beck and and there is a fairly good track all the way up to the reservoir. Steep but not too challenging.
From this high vantage point (1300ft) there are spectacular views over the valley below. After wading across the weir, it time to head down, taking the western route. This way is not such easy going, the track, when you can see it, is often the bed of a stream. Often it is hard to determine where the track is as you scramble over the boulders that are strewn everywhere. Fortunately, you can usually see where the track picks up in the distance.
A little way down I passed the junction that could take me to the peak of the Old Man of Coniston – I wasn’t really kitted out for this added hike so I will have to pay a return visit later in the week.
The track eventually finishes by the Sun Hotel, which is close to where I am staying but I headed back down into the village for some food and beer.
