After the long drive up to the Cottage yesterday I did not want to travel too far so I visited the nearby town of Barnard Castle.
Prior to my visit, my research had indicated that there was nothing much there and all pictures were of the Market Cross (see photo above). I was therefore pleasantly surprised.
It’s a very substantial and healthy town and would serve as a great base for a holiday. After exploring the town centre and finding an excellent cafe serving Sunday Lunch, I visited the grounds of the Bowes Museum. The Museum, I saved for a rainy day (that never happened)
Next the castle that the town town is named after.
Perched high on a hill overlooking the river Tees, it’s well worth a visit, not just for the castle, but for the spectacular views of the surrounding area too.
And then I ended the day with a walk along the banks of the River Tees.
