Spring Break 2011 – Yorkshire Dales/Teedale

My decision to holiday in this part of the country was brought about by a desire to visit the Beamish open air museum. I had never visited this part of the country before so it was mostly chance that I chose the village of Mickleton as my base. Seamingly in the middle of nowhere, it nonetheless offered a good central location with Beamish within easy reach (about an hour’s drive).

As is the norm. I found a location to break the journey to the cottage – Bolsover Castle. This is situated high on a hill and was clearly visible from mikes away as I drove up the A1(M). It’s quite a substantial collection of building with lots of access plus the bonus of the spectacular views. Well worth the visit.

Isle of Wight – Day 3

Last day and not quite as sunny. No way I could manage another of those enormous breakfasts, so I had a pair of kippers instead.

First stop was at Brading Roman Villa

Very extensive Roman ruins and a very interesting tour that lasted about 30 minutes – well worth the visit.

Isle of Wight – Day 2

Awoke to a greeted by clear sky and a hot sun.

After tucking into the biggest breakfast I’ve ever seen, I headed out for the first of the day’s planned trips.

Alum Bay

I parked in the Needles Park at Alum Bay – a very tacky and tiny theme park – mostly closed as it was out of season.

Isle of Wight – Day 1

I finally got around to visiting the Isle of Wight. I had some preconceived ideas about what the island was like, but happily I was very wrong.

I’d imagined an island full of mini-Blackpool type resorts, instead I found a very pleasant place.

I set off from Portsmouth on a gloomy morning and arrived 45 minutes later in Fishbourne

Gunwharf Quay

Traffic had been light so I arrived a Portsmouth an hour early and caught the 7am ferry.

Autumn Break 2010

Just got back from my annual autumn break – this year I went to Wales.

Started off with a trip to the Gower peninsular and Rhossili, a place I haven’t visited since the mid Seventies.

Rhossili

Unfortunately it was high tide so I couldn’t walk across to the Worms head but it’s still a spectacular place for a Clif-top walk.

Next a visit to Pembroke Castle.
